Roadway and Drainage Design

I 94 N-S Freeway Ryan Road (STH 100) Interchange, Milwaukee County:

Himalayan, as a member of Milwaukee Transportation Partners (MTP), leads a team of MTP designers to advance the 60% plan set to Final Design. The design includes multilane, metered ramps, two signalized intersections, a park and ride, two detention ponds and 2050 feet of Ryan Road, a six lane urban highway. Responsibilities include design of horizontal and vertical alignments, geometrics, drainage, staging, pavement markings, signage, fencing, removals, cross sections, park and ride, incorporation of several BMPs such as rain gardens and pervious pavement and obtaining the necessary Sec. 404 (USACE) and Chp. 30 (WDNR) permits. Also coordinate plat, utilities, signals, FTMS, lighting and structures done by others. Draft PS&E date: 11-19-2010. Final PS&E date: 2-1-2011. Construction: 2014.

Roadway: The Ryan Road bridge over I-94 has been selected to be the first bridge in Wisconsin to use the Accelerated Bridge Construction (ABC) method of Self Propelled Modular Transport (SPMT). The existing decks will be taken down in one full-freeway night closure and the new deck will be put into place in one full-freeway night closure using SPTMs. This construction technique will shorten the full closure on Ryan Road (STH 100) by several months and eliminate the need for all but two of the full-freeway night closures and will shorten the overall length of construction time for the project.

Drainage: The drainage design captures all of the runoff from the interchange and takes in over 200 acres of runoff from offsite drainage areas and detains it before releasing it to the Oak Creek. BioSwales, Rain Gardens, and Pervious Pavement are also used for detention and water quality. Due to tailwater issues, the two detention ponds and three of the infield areas are modeled as interconnected ponds using HydroCad. Additional considerations have been made to ensure that the storm sewer and culverts will not only function upon completion but also function during the various stages of construction.

USH 18 (Bluemound Road) (STH 100-124th Street), Milwaukee County:

Himalayan prepared pavement marking plans in accordance with FDM Chapter 15 and in coordination with regional traffic operations. This work also included the multiuse Oak Leaf Trail extension along Underwood Creek under USH 18.

S. 6th Street (W. Howard Ave-W. Holt Ave), W. Lapham Blvd (S. 1st Street-S. 11th Street), W. Bolivar Ave (S. 20th Street-S. 27th Street), and W. Holt Avenue (S. Chase Street-S. 6th Street), City of Milwaukee, Milwaukee County:

The concrete pavement of all the above streets that consisted of multitude deteriorating cracks with broken pieces, spalling, and shallow potholes. Evaluated pavement in the field and marked up areas for base repair, designed pavement overlay and prepared Pavement Design Report. Conducted utility coordination for 2.25 miles of local road rehabilitation on the above mentioned streets. Recommended base repair on full-depth cracks while milling and overlay was proposed to eliminate faults, spalling, and shallow potholes. This was an ARRA project.
